Aziderm (Azelex)

Aziderm is an cream containing azelaic acid, an antibacterial and anti-proliferative agent used to treat mild to moderate inflammatory acne and rosacea. This topical treatment combats acne vulgaris and rosacea by facilitating skin renewal, which in turn decreases the development of blemishes such as pimples and blackheads. The cream kills the bacteria before it causes an outbreak. This cream can also be used for pigmentation and skin whitening.

Azelaic acid makes for a dynamic treatment that works in two ways. First, there is antimicrobial activity in which the topical cream penetrates the pores (up to 10% of the applied dosage can be found in the epidermis and dermis) and unclogs pores at their surface level. The second way is that the cream normalizes keratinization, which is the process of skin cells maturing as they move toward the skin surface. These combined efforts stop acne from spreading and stop acne outbreaks before they appear by unblocking oil ducts in the skin.

This gel comes in two strengths, either containing 10% or 20% azelaic acid, a naturally occurring saturated dicarboxylic acid that is antibacterial.

Before applying this cream, wash treatment area. Apply the cream very lightly as using too much will prevent the pores from oxidization. After applying, wash your hands with soap to remove any leftover residue. Apply twice daily, once in the morning and once in the evening before bed.

You may see an improvement in just four weeks, but acne takes several months to clear. If required, you can continue to use Aziderm for several months.
